Ignite Spring 2017 – D360 Sparking Conversations About Disciple-building
From the executive director
Over the past year I’ve had some great opportunities to share the message of our D360 resource in a variety of conference settings. I always try to get on the schedule of breakout sessions, and I’ve had some really thoughtful interaction with breakout participants about the idea of whole-life discipleship. But I think what has been more intriguing to me has been my experience with people at LCMA’s exhibit table.
I’m sure many conference exhibitors are a lot like me. We set up with the hope that everyone will want to visit the table and learn about our ministry—yet with the conviction that a relatively small number have the kind of passion that we have for our own specialty ministry area and the expectation that only a small number will stop by.
D360 changed that a bit. Perhaps it was the unusual cover illustration of a pair of old Converse Chucks with a Bible leaning against them. Or perhaps it was just the word “Discipleship” in the title. But there was something about it that caught the eyes of a lot of passersby. Some would lock onto the cover and stay locked onto it even as they trolled by (that’s not a typo; lots of folks troll the exhibits like a fisherman in a bass boat). Others would come up and stare at it, maybe read the back cover blurb, even peek inside, and then quietly move on. Some would look at the cover, look up and read my badge, look back down, and say, “So you’re this guy?” On occasion someone would just step up and say, “I want one.”
A number of great conversations took place—conversations that revolved around revitalizing the daily expression, the daily living, of our faith in response to the work of the Holy Spirit (a.k.a. discipleship). I don’t think it’s too far off the mark to suggest that a growing number of Christ-followers are coming to a richer appreciation for the idea of building whole-life disciples. That’s exciting—especially for an organization whose mission is “equipping leaders to make disciples who make disciples on campus” (that’s us at LCMA). Our constant prayer is to be able to support you as you disciple the Church of today and the Church of the future.

God is at work on a project to restore all of His creation, beginning with the image of Himself in you and me. God has invited us to join Him in this project. How? By (1) making us worthy of joining Him through the redemption that Jesus won for each of us by His death and resurrection … AND (2) through Jesus’ command, “Wherever you go, make disciples of all nations: Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to do everything I have commanded you” (D360: Nine Conversations About Whole-life Discipleship, p. 166).
God bless us in our ministry together!
